I'm not going to try to define nor explain "lag"... just offer a solution which works for me.
Use a memory cleaning program!
DS usually doesn't lag nor crash while the memory cleaner is running.

Also, disable services that you don't need to start automatically, especially update services that check for updates daily even though most programs are only updated once per month.
I've cut my running processes down to 31 (excluding 6 opera.exe processes currently running) by disabling nonessential services.
If I switch from WiFi to ethernet, I could disable more services & have more memory, but I use WiFi for three devices.

Ping may also be a factor, but I can't explain that either.
My ping is usually very low (below 20 in most games) which is good. Low ping is good. High ping is bad.
